ImageAs home and business monitoring and protection is on the rise, people need to learn about and understand video surveillance laws.  The good news is that when it comes to video surveillance, most options are perfectly legal in America.  The reason is that typically, this type of surveillance involves privacy invasion in which covert cameras are used.  While some people do not agree with this kind of protection, the consensus is that we all have the right to protection.

Now, the location of the video surveillance would have some consideration.  For example, there are some places that would be deemed inappropriate and even illegal in some states.  This might include a dressing room, locker room, restrooms, etc.  Of course, the place where this type of surveillance can be placed must follow strict guidelines as outlined in video surveillance laws.

The thing you need to know associated with video surveillance laws is that if you have a hidden camera, if there is also audio being recorded, you would be breaking the law.  In a situation such as this where both video and audio are being monitored and/or recorded, the person being watched and listened to would have to give permission.  Otherwise, that person’s privacy could be at risk.

Another time when video surveillance laws state that hidden cameras would be illegal is if any illegal activity is being encouraged.  Additionally, if the person being watched has legal right to an attorney, if someone is going through questioning by law enforcement, or if the owner of the home or business has not given permission for audio and/or video surveillance to be conducted, you could be doing something illegal.

One of the most important things you can do before even buying some kind of surveillance system is to do your homework on what is and is not allowed.  Some information pertaining to video surveillance laws can be found online but we always recommend that you check with an attorney to make sure you know ahead of time areas that would be of concern.  Obviously, the last thing you want to do is get in trouble by not following current laws.

Then, video surveillance laws are not only governed by the city, but they can also be listed under the state or federal guides.  Studies have shown that surveillance systems are extremely helpful when it comes to protecting property and family.  In fact, for detection and even conviction, this is also helpful.  Even with all the benefits, it is imperative that laws be followed.

In some cases, video surveillance laws can be confusing and trying to sort them out is challenging.  Because of this, make sure you know what each of these laws is so you do the right things.  Laws do change and sometimes staying on top of changes is near impossible.  For this reason, working with an attorney who fully knows video surveillance laws inside and out is always the best option.

Once video surveillance laws are understood, you can then choose the type of equipment you want, based on the surveillance need.  If you have a babysitter and want to keep an eye on his or her interaction with your child, then a nanny cam would be ideal.  This small camera can be hidden or out in the open.  In addition, you can choose cameras that record the day’s activities or one that provides real time information to you via computer.

On the other hand, if you have problems with someone messing around the outside of the home, you might want a hidden camera that can record things in case you need evidence in a court of law.  With so many needs, you will also find a big selection of surveillance devices that would work.  Best of all, these devices come in many different sizes, styles, and price ranges, as well as features.  This way, you simply go with the solution that will provide you with the right type and level of protection.

The exciting news is that technology has evolved to a point that it has never been better.  Today, the video and audio surveillance devices are small but loaded with power.  Depending on the option chosen, some will work in low light situations.  Then, there are some cameras that can pan 360 degrees and others are designed to connect to a computer, using motion detection or sensors.  Again, there are so many wonderful possibilities but before making any choice, get to know video surveillance laws.
