ImageThe Global Positioning System, otherwise known as GPS, has changed society for the better.  This small, technological device can be installed in a vehicle or carried on a person, providing information as to a specific location.  The information provided with GPS tracking is then stored in the unit or in some cases, it is transmitted to a computer or database via internet.

Keep in mind that GPS tracking is possible because of satellites out in space.  Therefore, the signals transmitted back are completely accurate.  Obviously, there are some terrific reasons for using this system.  In addition to helping a person determine a precise location, a GPS system can also protect a person so they do not become lost.

The interesting thing about GPS tracking is that it was actually introduced back in 1982 under the name of “Automatic Position Reporting”.  However, over the years, not only has the name changed but the technology itself has improved dramatically.  Because of this, even the number of uses has grown.  Below are just a few examples of the way in which GPS tracking works.
  • Military – GPS tracking is used to take latitude and longitude, providing military personnel with positions.  With this information, distances and directions can be determined with accuracy.  While in other countries, GPS could virtually mean the difference between life and death.
  • Law Enforcement – You will also find that many law enforcement agencies also use GPS tracking.  When going on calls, the system can provide directions based on address information input.
  • Campers and Hikers – People who enjoy spending time outdoors camping, hiking, or backpacking find GPS tracking a comforting technology to take along.  For this, if you parked your car, the specifics would be entered into the system.  From there, as you make your way into dense areas, you can always find your way back to the vehicle, regardless of where you go.  Knowing you will never get lost by using GPS tracking makes it one of the most valuable tools you can take.
  • Children’s Whereabouts – GPS tracking can also be used with a watch or cell phone.  In this case, a receiver is added to the watch or phone, which provides parents with information as to the child’s whereabouts.  That way, the real time information provides safety, something every parents wants.
  • Fleet Management – This too is another way in which GPS tracking is being used.  Today, fleet management companies can use software that allows them to identify how fast a driver is going, the number of stops made and the amount of time at each spot, the location of the driver and truck, and other information that can be used to better the operation of the company.
  • Driving – GPS tracking is also used for everyday driving.  In this case, a system is installed in the factory or can be installed, which then helps a driver reach his or her destination.  With this system, you would enter the address or business you want to visit and within seconds, you are provided with visible directions.  In some cases, the system will also have an audio voice that talks you through every turn toward the destination.
  • Fishing – Even people who enjoy fishing can benefit from GPS tracking.  In this case, there is a special type of fish finder that is equipped with GPS and sonar.  Together, fish under the water can be seen, giving the person a better chance of going home with a nice catch.
Remember, these are just a handful of ways in which GPS tracking has proven to be beneficial.  As this technology continues to evolve, it is expected to see even more options in the near future.  When the GPS system and technology first became popular, the cost was high but today, you could buy a GPS device for less than $50.  Of course, there are some basic models but for someone who wants something on the high-end, there are lots of possibilities there too.

While GPS has proven to work exceptionally well, you should understand that there are times when the satellite signals have a difficult time reaching the receiver.  For instance, during times of bad weather, being surrounded by tall buildings, and even when there are certain types of electronic interference, you may find it hard to get a signal.

Just remember that running into a problem is rare so most of the time you will be able to find your way without any problem.  Of course, GPS tracking does not work underground or water but for the uses mentioned, you will find this to be an exceptional technology that people are finding it near impossible to live without.
